How To Pitch A Tent

INSTRUCTIONS (Be aware that this may not be suitable for some types of tents)

During this process, make sure that you put spare pegs and poles in to the bag it came in.

1. First of all, you will need to unfold the base of the tent and lay it down. Ensure that the opening of the tent is facing the right way. Get a peg and place it through the eyelit. Hammer it in to the ground at a 45 degree angle AND so it is a bit hard to pull out. Repeat on every corner.

2. Once you have finished hammering the pegs, you will have to get the poles out and thread them through the inner tent. Once they reach the other side of the tent have a friend pull it out and put it in the second smaller eyelit. Repeat this process for the second pole.

3. Thirdly, you will need the fly (outer tent). Place it carefully on top of the inner tent. Make sure that the fly’s entrance matches the inner tents door.

4. You will find that there are little ropes attached to the fly. These are called GuyRopes. You will need more pegs for this. Hammer them down as you did the same with the four corners. But you don’t need to secure it as tightly.

5. Once you have finished that, you may lie down in your perfectly pitched tent.

2010 has been a THRILLING year. Though I found a few things difficult, the rest was still awesome! I think that I’ve done a good amount of work this year and that I have done well. The rest of my writing will explain to you why.

Firstly, writing. I figure I did pretty good with it. My motivation, is that I would like to be an author in the future. I reckon I’m a slow writer, when Miss Garden tells us things I take time to process it all.

To be honest, I’m not a fan of Maths. I guess I didn’t do as good as I could have. For me, the strategies were quite difficult. Because when ever I thought I’d learnt how to do it properly, we would move on to another strategy. Maths is the one subject that I would REALLY like to improve on.

My MAIN motivation for this year was Prize-giving. It was AMAZING! I REALLY liked our ambassador prizes. I also love receiving lolly leis (Though I’m not sure where they disappear to).

Camp Bentzon was a HUGE highlight for me. It was the first time I had seen dolphins, stingrays, wallabies, jellyfish and a gummy shark! Though it was a bit frightening, the camp was SENSATIONAL!!! Another exhilarating bit was studying Active Earth. I really liked our projects. I think my booklet looks impressive.

So there you have it, the main reasons why I thought my year was thrilling! 2011, here I come!

Ele Opeloge+Weights=GOLD MEDAL

The movie above is a task we received in extension. We had to decide on a Commonwealth Sport, and then choose an athlete, either, a person who plays for New Zealand or who plays for your culture. I chose weightlifting and Ele Opeloge. She is a very famous weightlifter along with her brother. My whole family supported her through yelling at the TV. And I think that's one of the reasons why she won. She has quite a LOT of fans. I'm proud to say that I'm one of them.

Life Among The Sea

Life must be so hard for a crawling litle crab. Their shells always getting tossed in to the sea. Children shrieking with excitement when they crawl out of their shells. Hiding underneath thick grey rocks, forever hoping that no one will find it. But then being lifted in the hands of an excited toddler.

Then everything changes when grown up. Being shoved around in the sea and then shooed away on shore by angry parents or scared children. From being lifted up to being pushed away.

Life must be so hard for a crawling little crab...

Vaka Voyagers

Maori myths and legends tell us stories of how the first Polynesians got to Aotearoa New Zealand. Yet, no one knows where they came from. Most think from the island of Hawaiiki, which is around all the other Pacific Islands. The movie above explains what they would've taken along for the journey. Imagine trying to pack food for 50 people, for 3 months!!! These polynesians sure are Mighty Mariners. 

 Too bad no one else can do the same as these brave warriors.

The Mightiest Mariners of Pt England

Ahhh, Mighty Mariners. The topic for the third term at Point England. This morning at assembly, we had a visit from Rose (Titanic), Leif Errickson (Vikings), Jessica Wottson (Modern Mariner) and a heap lot of pirates! Mighty Mariners is the topic. Teachers around keep on talking like pirates, parrots are landing on the principal's head, what next? I wouldn't be surprised if Black Beard the pirate came to tea! Mighty Mariners....... here we come!

Go the diamonds! Yaaayyy! Tomorrow is our last game for Term 3. We are all very excited. "We" is the year 6 Point England Netball team : Diamonds. Our coach is Mrs Nua, who teaches Room 20. She is a very good coach. In netball, there are 9 people. But two people are subs every game.

Drop, Cover and Hold!

Drop, Cover and Hold! Those are the three steps that you would do during an earthquake. Today is one of those days. As our students are calling it, Disaster Day has turned out to be exactly what it has been named. We've had to quickly crawl under our tables. Yesterday, I, Toreka, just witnessed my first earthquake(s) Toreka, 10 year old reporter,is out.
